Cinder block walls

by Beverly

Hello I have drywall questions, we are remodeling our 1949 home the basement outer walls and middle support wall are all cinder blocks. I would like to put up drywall to make the rooms look finished and clean but I am being told that the walls will sweat and ruin the drywall, is there any way I can put up dry wall on the walls? There has been issues in the past with water getting in the basement but I truly believe the water is coming from the roof as it needs a lot of work also, on the north outer wall we plan to put some sort of water proofing and run a drainage system. Look forward to hearing back from you.

Thank you

The first thing you will want to do before placing any drywall will be to solve the water issue. I would recommend using dry lock to try and seal it for extra level of protection.

Drywall for cinder block walls

Thanks for contacting us. Well I can tell you first hand from having a cinder block basement. This is a bit of a touch and go situation. You do have several options though. The first thing you will want to do before placing any drywall will be to solve the water issue. I would recommend using dry lock to try and seal it for extra level of protection. Regardless you will need to build walls to hang your finished material. Being in a basement their is always a change of moisture so use treated lumber.
The first thing I would suggest is looking at using cement board vs drywall. It allows for a finished product but is much more durable and resilient to moisture and does not mold.
If you do use drywall once the water situation is fixed use moisture resistant. I highly recommend using cement board. It is a bit heavy and cumbersome to work with but better safe than sorry.I always tell home owners to wait a year after they have dry fitted basement. To see how it fairs with water and make sure it is dry. Before ever attempting to finish it. Because I have seen several dry basements flood during heavy rains.
I hope this helps if you have more detailed questions I can address. Please post.
