Darwin's kitchen

I recently took down an ugly Formica backsplash in my kitchen. However, while removing the yellow construction adhesive I exposed the drywall down to the thin brown layer. The plan was to install a new backsplash, which is a lightweight stainless steel peel and stick tile. This backsplash project has my husband and I bickering over how to install the new backsplash tiles over the old drywall. I keep insisting that we install new 1/4 inch drywall over the exsisting drywall that is stripped down to the brown layer. However, my lazy husband wants to just put the new backsplash tiles right over the old drywall and hope the new backsplash stays put. After doing some research online I learned that many people simply prime and seal the drywall that is exposed down to the brown layer and then tile. If anyone with experience in drywall projects could offer some advice I would greatly appreciate it. I am a semi-experienced DIY wife with a very lazy husband and on a tight budget, so please HELP.
