Taping butt joints?

by Nathan
(Canada)

I've installed a ceiling but I'm not too sure how to finish the butt joints. Do I tape and mud like the joints along the edges? If so, should I use paper or fibreglass?

using adhesive tape? NEW
by: Anonymous

I think fiberglass adhesive tape is way over rated for use on drywall joints. I have had to repair too many drywall joints that someone else taped with mesh tape.

The problem shows up most often on butt joints. Once the mesh tape is applied and a couple of coats or more of joint compound have been put over that, you may have a nice looking joint but it may not be stable.

What I have found is that if down the road you get just the slightest bit of vibration or movement in the joint area, the fiberglass tape will ridge up and now you have an eyesore. When I am called to do this kind of repair, I just pull out the mesh and retape with paper tape.
which works a lot better on butt joints.

Sometimes you can get away with using mesh tape on the long tapered joints because you will have more mud over the tape and so the tape is more deeply embedded. But... if you insist on mesh tape, than stick your tape on with something tougher, like quick set compound rather than regular pre-mixed compound.

Mudding and taping butt joints NEW
by: DrywallTeam

Hello,

You will want to apply tape over the length of the joint. Next you will want to apply a light coat of compound over the tape. To bond the the two walls together. Visiting our mudding and taping page for more details on the process.
I personally prefer to use fiberglass but a lot of industry pros say to use paper. I like the fiberglass especially for beginners since it has adhesive on the back not to mention it is a mesh. Which I believe makes a stronger bond.

I hope this helps.

Tyler
